"If Yous Desire Me to Stay" is a 1973 hit single by Sly and the Family unit Stone, from their album Fresh.
Background [edit]
Stone recorded the song without much input from the rest of the band; past the early 1970s, he had begun crafting near of his material by himself. An alternate version of "If You Want Me to Stay", too as most of the residuum of the Fresh album, was completed before Stone decided to scrap the masters and re-record the album. These alternating versions have surfaced in surreptitious markets, online auctions, and specialty shops. However, five bonus tracks are included in Epic'due south 2007 reissue of Fresh, all of which are straight from the alternate mix of the album.
Song analysis [edit]
The lyrics of "If You Want Me to Stay" feature frontman Sly Stone informing his lover that she has to let him be himself, otherwise he feels that he would take to leave. The composition has its origins in an apology Stone wrote to his future wife, Kathleen Silva, after a fight.
Chart functioning [edit]
"If Y'all Want Me to Stay" was the ring'south final Elevation 20 popular hit, and is the all-time-known of its post-At that place's a Anarchism Goin' On recordings. The single reached number 12 on the Popular Chart, and number 3 on the Billboard R&B Singles Nautical chart.[2]

British soul singer Mica Paris released a version of "Stay" in 1998, as the pb unmarried from the album Black Affections.[3] Her version spent ii weeks on the UK Singles Chart before peaking at number forty on May 16, 1998.[four] It also reached the tiptop forty of the New Zealand Singles Chart.[5]
